Help Yetim Humanitarian Aid Organization, established by Turkish expats in Europe, delivered the collected donations to those struggling in the flood-hit regions of Pakistan, as part of a major aid campaign launched in Europe.

HEALTH SCREENINGS IN PROGRESS
Help Yetim set up a temporary tent city in the flood-affected region to provide shelter and meet the food needs of families living there. In response to the outbreak of diseases in the area, they deployed mobile health teams that conducted health screenings in various parts of the region. Cahit Ataş, President of Help Yetim Humanitarian Aid Organization, stated that they launched an emergency relief campaign after the flood and that the initial donations were delivered to the region through local organizations.

ASSESSING LOCAL NEEDS
Highlighting the ongoing humanitarian aid needs in the flood region, Ataş mentioned that their team is on the ground to assess the situation, stating: “Our initial assessments revealed a need for support in shelter, food, and healthcare. With the help of local organizations, we quickly established a temporary tent city for shelter. We relocated families whose homes were submerged to these tents. We are currently distributing food to them.”

HIGH RISK OF DISEASE OUTBREAKS
Ataş expressed concerns over the severe risk of disease outbreaks in the flood area, saying, “Due to the floods and contaminated waters, disease-carrying mosquitoes have proliferated, exposing almost everyone to infectious diseases. Unhygienic practices and contaminated food and water are leading to illnesses such as typhoid, watery diarrhea, and hepatitis. The lack of hygiene measures in the camps and close contact are increasing the risk of contagious diseases like scabies. There's a significant threat of disease, and even fatalities, due to these conditions.”

Ataş emphasized that stagnant floodwaters still pose a danger, especially to families and children. “There has been a noticeable increase in typhoid and diarrhea cases due to contaminated waters. In response to complaints, we initiated health screenings with our mobile health teams in collaboration with private hospitals in Karachi. Thousands have benefited from our services, with many receiving preliminary treatments. Medications were distributed under medical supervision to help protect against diseases. Additionally, protective kits were given out to prevent mosquito bites,” he said.

Ataş highlighted that it could take around a year for the floodwaters to fully recede. “The floodwater accumulation, particularly in the plains, poses a risk to both farmers and the local population’s health. Agricultural lands remain submerged, and in some areas, there's not enough suitable soil to bury the deceased properly. Access to food has become a critical need, with high prices and difficulties in obtaining supplies causing problems for the local population,” he added.
