Cahit Ataş, President of the Help Yetim Organization, visited the State Hospital in the Oulessebougou region, located 150 kilometers from the capital Bamako. He met with the Chief Physician and ophthalmologist Dr. Malle Sekou to get updates on the patients' conditions.
As part of the "Be a Ray of Hope for Darkened Skies" project, supported by donors, 71 cataract patients underwent surgery in a single day, allowing them to see again.
Ataş highlighted that there are hundreds of thousands of cataract patients in Africa, waiting for a helping hand. He noted the need for widespread support and continued:
"The main causes of cataracts are hot weather and malnutrition. Additionally, challenging climate conditions are increasingly affecting people’s lives, leading to cataracts appearing even in young individuals. As support grows, we will continue to be the eyes for our patients here. We will keep being a beacon of hope for them. Every surgery performed here not only restores sight to a patient but also liberates those who depend on them."
Dr. Malle Sekou stated that Mali is one of the countries with the highest incidence of cataract cases in the world, with 80,000 patients across the country who have lost their vision and are waiting to see again.
